What is Cardano?

            Cardano is a blockchain platform designed to support decentralized applications (dApps), smart contracts, and other blockchain-based functionalities, much like Ethereum, but with a focus on scalability, security, and sustainability. It uses a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus algorithm, which is more energy-efficient compared to proof-of-work (PoW) algorithms used by other blockchains like Bitcoin.

Cardano was created by Charles Hoskinson, one of the co-founders of Ethereum, and is developed by Input Output Hong Kong (IOHK). The project aims to build a blockchain that is more secure and scalable while maintaining a strong commitment to academic research and peer-reviewed design.

Key features of Cardano include:

1. Proof-of-Stake (PoS): Instead of relying on energy-intensive mining (like Bitcoin), Cardano uses PoS, where validators (or "stake pool operators") are chosen to create new blocks based on the number of ADA (Cardano's native cryptocurrency) they hold and are willing to "stake" as collateral.

2. Layered Architecture: Cardano's blockchain is split into two main layers:

   • The Cardano Settlement Layer (CSL): This is where transactions are processed and recorded.

   • The Cardano Computation Layer (CCL): This layer handles smart contracts and decentralized applications.

3. ADA Token: ADA is the native cryptocurrency of the Cardano network and is used for transactions, staking, and governance.

4. Focus on Formal Verification: Cardano emphasizes formal methods, a mathematical approach to software development that aims to prove the correctness of the code underlying the blockchain's protocols.

5. Sustainability: One of the project's goals is to create a blockchain that can scale without compromising decentralization or security, and that can be maintained with low environmental impact.

                Cardano continues to evolve through a series of development phases, with a significant focus on improving governance and scalability over time.
